GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATIONS
Reliable design and high-quality construction largely depend on detailed and accurate geotechnical investigations. SMGE Studio, in cooperation with its partners, carries out geotechnical investigations and site investigation works that provide essential data required for the safe, efficient, and cost-effective execution of construction projects. Our expert team uses modern methods and equipment to accurately collect and analyze soil data, providing Investors with a reliable basis for making informed design decisions.
As of May 2026, SMGE Studio, together with its partners, operates its own drilling rig capable of continuous core drilling to depths of up to 20.0 m, using the VLIG GTC COMPACT – a compact and highly mobile machine that enables access even to the most challenging and hard-to-reach terrains. This upgrade significantly expands our capabilities and allows us to provide an even higher level of quality and more comprehensive services.
The geotechnical investigation technologies available at SMGE Studio include the following:
- Drilling in soil and rock – trusted partners
- Mechanical drilling in soil (from May 2026) – GTC COMPACT
- Manual drilling in soil
What do geotechnical investigations include?
High-quality investigations form the foundation of safe design and construction. Through our field and laboratory testing, we determine:
- Soil composition and properties
- Bearing capacity of the foundation soil
- Groundwater level
- Slope stability
Why are soil investigations essential?
High-quality investigations enable optimal decision-making regarding foundation design, slope stability, and the protection of surrounding structures. This ensures the safety and long-term stability of structures and helps prevent unforeseen issues during the construction phase.

GTC Compact
The GTC Compact is a multifunctional drilling rig designed for professional use. It consists of a drilling unit and a hydraulic power pack, built as separate but coordinated units, allowing for greater flexibility and easier transport to challenging terrains.
The machine is particularly suitable for geotechnical investigations on flat or gently sloping terrains, including:
- The head and the toe of a landslide
- Foundations for residential and industrial buildings
- Temporary excavation pits
- Industrial halls and similar structures
Manual drilling – slopes and landslides
SMGE Studio continues to utilize one of the most important, yet also one of the most demanding methods of investigation drilling – manual drilling. This method remains indispensable in situations involving steep terrains, active landslides, or locations that are inaccessible to any type of machinery. Manual drilling enables safe and precise investigations in conditions where mechanical access is not possible, ensuring the continuity and quality of geotechnical data.
The manual drilling method is particularly suitable for investigations on terrains:
- Landslide bodies
- Terrain slopes greater than 15°
- Inaccessible locations such as field roads, forested areas, and sites without access roads
- Verification of depth to bedrock and validation of geophysical profiles and other investigation methods
